DSR conducts a Successful Farmer’s Rally cum Training Program on Sorghum Cultivation in Rice-Fallows at Tenali  

Directorate of Sorghum Research (DSR) successfully conducted a Farmer’s Rally cum Training Program on “Promotion of sorghum cultivation in rice- fallows under the Tribal Sub Plan”. The rally was organized at Agricultural Market Yard, Tenali, Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on 4th November 2011 under the chairmanship of Dr. JV Patil Director, DSR. The event was conducted with an aim to create awareness among the farmers on the modern sorghum production technology under zero tillage in rice-fallows and sharing information on value addition and utilization of sorghum products as a health food. Dr K Shankar Reddy, ADR, RARS, Lam, Guntur; Dr V Shankar Rao, ADA, Agricultural College, Bapatla; Sri V Sreedhar, JDA, Guntur, and officials from the Krishi Vignan Kendra, Kavvur were present during the training program. The scientists from DSR delivered lectures on different aspects of package of practices for the cultivation of sorghum and in particular advised not to burn the fodder. It can be incorporated in soil using Rotavetor or may be used as fodder. The progressive farmers, viz., Sri Mandava Sambasivarao, Karumanchi Apparao, R. Raghavendar Rao, Yerru Ravindra Babu, L. Hari Babu, B.Srinivasa Rao have and others participated in this event. More than 600 farmers participated in the training program. Mrs. Jyothi Ramani, ADA, Mrs. K. Amala Kumari, Agricultural Officer and other agricultural officers of the Krishna, Guntur and Prakasham districts also had participated in this programme. The press & media (Eenadu, Andhra Jyothi, Sakshi, Praja Sakti and Andhra Prabha etc.), All India Radio, Dooradarshan and ETV2 have given a good coverage for this event.  Farmers were informed about the integrated insect, disease, nutrient, weed and water management practices. Sorghum exhibition stall also was organized in which all important sorghum cultivars and sorghum food products were displayed. The seeds of CSH 16 and Telugu literature on “Sorghum Cultivation in Rice – Fallows ” were distributed to farmers.

Overall, in Guntur district of A.P. sorghum cultivation in rice fallows during 2004 was 1000 ha and the area increased to 5000 ha in 2010 due to concerted efforts of Directorate of Sorghum Research (ICAR). DSR has promoted high yielding dual purpose hybrids and varieties under zero-tillage technology in a big way. It is likely increase in sorghum cultivation area in rice-fallow in western Krishna basin of AP as an impact of this event.
