Current responsibilities:

  • Sorghum parental line development and hybrid breeding
  • Sorghum grain micronutrient enrichment through conventional and molecular breeding
  • Genetic augmentation of grain yield in foxtail millet and identification of trait-specific genotypes
  • Genetic enhancement of grain yield and contributing traits in kodo millet
  • DUS testing in sorghum for grant of Plant Variety Protection under PPV&FRA, New Delhi

Recent major contributions:

  • Contributed 12 advance breeding lines and two hybrids for multi-location evaluation under AICRP-Sorghum. SPV 2296 (AVT II), SPV 2348, SPV 2362 and SPV 2363 (AVT I), and SPH 1813 (AHT I) are under evaluation in advanced grain sorghum trials.
  • Detected sufficient variability for grain micronutrient contents and other nutritional and health quality parameters like polyphenols, phytate, fibre, trypsin inhibitor and cyanogens in popular sorghum cultivars, parental lines and selected germplasm accessions; mapping populations for polyphenols, phytates and anti-oxidant quality are being developed.
  • Worked out genetic control of grain iron and zinc contents in sorghum, detected differential nutrient accumulation by the genotypes, and proposed appropriate breeding strategies for grain micronutrient enrichment.
