Current responsibilities:
- Genetic augmentation of grain yield in foxtail millet and identification of trait-specific genotypes
- Sorghum grain micronutrient enrichment through conventional breeding and molecular approaches
- Sorghum parental line development and hybrid breeding
- DUS testing in sorghum for grant of Plant Variety Protection under PPV&FRA, New Delhi
Recent major contributions:
- Associated with development of JaicarHeera (CSV 36/SPV 2301) and JaicarSona (CSV 39/SPV 2358), high yielding kharif grain sorghum varieties with moderate tolerance to important pests and diseases.
- Contributed nearly 15 advance breeding lines and two hybrids for multi-location evaluation under AICRP-Sorghum;these genotypes are being used as parents for further improvement; developed 40 new male sterile lines and more than 200 restorer lines for parental line diversification.
- Identified promising genotypes from elite and exotic germplasm of foxtail millet, and contributed four high yielding selections to multi-location testing which are in different stages of evaluation.
- Detected sufficient variability for grain micronutrient contents and other nutritional and health quality parameters like polyphenols, phytate, fibre, trypsin inhibitor and cyanogens in popular sorghum cultivars, parental lines and selected germplasm accessions;mapping populations for polyphenols, phytates and anti-oxidant quality were developed.
- Worked out genetic control of grain iron and zinc contents in sorghum, detected differential nutrient accumulation by the genotypes, and proposed appropriate breeding strategies for grain micronutrient enrichment.
