The sample is digested by heating it with concentrated sulphuric acid in the presence of salt and metal catalyst. Digestion converts nitrogen in all organic molecules to ammonia and is trapped in the form of ammonium sulphate. Ammonia is steam distilled and its concentration determined by titration.
