Celebration of “World Environment Day-2026 under the theme ‘Climate Action’

Tree Plantation and Awareness program on Importance of Millet Crops in Climate Resilient Agriculture

As part of the World Environment Day 2026 celebrations under the theme "Climate Action", ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (ICAR-IIMR), Global Centre of Excellence on Millets (Shree Anna), Hyderabad, organized a tree plantation and awareness programme on 5 June 2026. Led by Dr. B. Amasiddha, Dr. Sangappa, and Mr. J. Bhagavantham, the programme witnessed active participation from the Institute's scientific and technical staff. Dr. B. V. Bhat, Director (I/c), planted tree saplings along with the staff and highlighted the importance of tree plantation and millet cultivation in building climate-resilient agriculture, urging everyone to contribute towards environmental conservation through sustained plantation efforts.

Promotion of Millets as Climate-Smart Crops on World Environment Day 2026

To mark World Environment Day 2026 under the theme "Climate Action", ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (ICAR-IIMR), Global Centre of Excellence on Millets (Shree Anna), Hyderabad, organized an awareness programme on 4 June 2026 at Ballanpally village, Telangana. Led by Dr. Vikas Kumar and Dr. A. Srinivas, the programme was attended by 13 farmers. The participants were sensitized to the benefits of millets as climate-smart crops due to their low water and fertilizer requirements and resilience to changing climatic conditions. Farmers were encouraged to adopt millet cultivation for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.

Promotion of climate resilient crop varieties of foxtail millet and quality seed distribution to the farmers

The promotional activity was organized in the Yanakapally village on 3rd June, 2026, wherein 12 millet growing farmers participated. The farmers were provided with improved package of practices in foxtail millet cultivation and 20 kg quality seeds of SiA3088 variety was distributed. Scientific and technical staff of IIMR interacted with farmers and encouraged them to cultivate other climate resilient crops.

Awareness program on cultivation of climate resilient crops to the dryland farmers and distribution of quality seeds

A group of 24 women farmers visited ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad from Hanuman Nagar and Kismatpur villages on 2 June 2026. The awareness was created among the women farmers on climate change effects on agriculture and the crops suitable for cultivation in the changing environmental conditions. The quality seeds of millets were distributed and encouraged them to cultivate and consume millets.
